ORS Faculty Information

How do I apply?

Every spring a call for proposals is sent out providing faculty with the information they need to apply to be a research scholar mentor. Proposals typically are due in March via an online application process. Faculty whose proposals are accepted will be notified by the end of the Spring semester.

How many students may I have?

Generally, faculty have one or two students. However, you get only a single stipend regardless of how many students you mentor.

How many credits do my students get?

Generally, students may receive 1-2 credit hours per semester. Consult with your division, because different disciplines have different needs. However, a good rule of thumb is to go by the standard Carnegie Credit hours. This means that 1 hour of faculty "face time" weekly would combine with 2-3 hours of research for each credit hour. Historically, most faculty have adhered to this standard.

How am I compensated?

The mentoring of student researchers is compensated by a stipend (subject to taxes where applicable) or banking credit. Please note that payment of the stipend happens only after your student has presented at the Spring Research Symposium

How do my students get compensated?

Students receive academic credit that fulfills their experiential learning (E) requirement.

How do I ensure my students get the proper credit?

Students receive credit by enrolling in an independent research or directed study course in your department. Students must submit a completed independent study form available through the Advising Support Center.
