What to and Not to Bring

The important thing to remember is that it is a lot easier to have your parents send you the things you didn't realize you would need, than to find that you need to go through the hassle of shipping unnecessary items to your home from school. We recommend that you communicate with your roommate to decide who will bring large items such as televisions, stereos, or mini-refrigerators*.

Here is a list of items that on-campus residents often find helpful. This is NOT a list of required items, nor does it represent everything you might want or need:

  • Alarm clock
  • All purpose cleaner
  • Bath towels, soaps, robe, etc.
  • Bedding, sheets, pillows, blankets
  • Bike and bike lock
  • Computer
  • Eating utensils, plate, bowl, cup
  • First aid kit, bandages, aspirin
  • Hair products, hair dryer
  • Headphones
  • Iron and small ironing board
  • Laundry bag (or basket)
  • Laundry soap
  • Mini refrigerator (Not to Exceed 4 cubic feet), one per student room.
  • Pens, pencils, scissors, tape, etc.
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Power strip/surge protector (Extension cords are prohibited; power strips must be UL approved with circuit breakers.)
  • Reading light (Halogen bulbs and string LED lights are NOT permitted)
  •  Safety pins, needles and thread
  • Shower shoes
  • Small toolbox
  • Sports equipment
  • Television that can connect to our stream cable service, SpectrumU. More information here.
  • Trash can
  • Umbrella

All mini refrigerators should be ENERGY STAR rated.

Also, remember that there are stores around the Oxford/Covington area, such as Big K-Mart; Wal-Mart; Big Lots, etc. for picking up things you may have forgotten, or things you choose to purchase when you arrive at Oxford.

Perhaps more importantly, here are a few things that you MUST LEAVE AT HOME!

  • Air conditioners
  • Air fryer
  • Any appliance with exposed heating coil
  • Candles or incense
  • Ceiling fans
  • Coil lighting or string lights

  • Mini indoor grills (example: George Foreman grill)
  • Multi-arm (flower) lamps - often floor lamps
  • Pets - Due to health and safety hazards and sanitation problems, pets are not allowed in the residence halls. Only tropical and domestic fish are permitted and must be kept in a ten gallon (or less) aquarium and only if all roommates agree to have an aquarium.
  • Plug-in air fresheners
  • Space heaters
  • String LED lights
  • Velcro, double-sided tape, hooks with double-sided taped, etc. will damage the walls when removed and are prohibited.
