Housing Selection

Whether you are a new student planning to enroll at Oxford or a rising sophomore continuing for the new academic year, the instructions that follow will help you complete room selection for Oxford College residence halls.

You may access the housing agreement and application by visiting the My Housing website or at myhousing.emory.edu. You will need your Emory user id and password to access this website. Once you've logged in, select the appropriate Oxford Campus Second Year Housing Application. In your application, you’ll be able to answer questions about your living preferences, including if you are interested in Gender-Inclusive Housing.

To complete the housing application, you must agree to the terms and conditions of residence hall living. A printer-friendly copy of the Oxford College Housing Agreement can be accessed online. You will be asked to read and indicate your acceptance of these terms before you can enter any particular preferences in room assignment and preferred roommate into the online system.

Please note: If you experience any technical difficulties, completely close your internet browser before attempting to log back into the system. This may clear the particular error you are experiencing and allow you to proceed without further difficulties. If you continue to have problems, please email our staff at RES@emory.edu with a detailed description of the error message you are encountering.

The Room Selection Process for the upcoming semester will occur in April for rising second-year students.

More information of the Room Selection Process.

The philosophy of Oxford College is that all students benefit significantly from the opportunity to engage fully in the college community. The convenience of living on campus encourages students to take part in evening concerts, theatrical productions, utilize academic resources and get involved in the many clubs and activities that are a part of campus life. For this reason, all students are expected to live on campus.

In some individual circumstances, students may determine the need to request commuter status. See below for information on the commuter request policy.

Even if you intend to request commuter status, you MUST complete an online housing application and agree to the terms and conditions of residence hall living for each semester in which you are enrolled. If commuter status is approved, you will be assigned to "Commuter Hall" to reflect this. Any commuting student who does not complete a housing application and the commuter request process within the timeframe designated for the academic term may be subject to a registration hold and unable to schedule and/or enroll in courses until this task has been finalized.

The commuter status request application will be available on your MyHousing page in mid April.

A limited number of single rooms exist on campus. Priority for single rooms is given to those students with Department of Accessibility Services (DAS) medical approved housing accommodation. Students needing medical accommodations for a single should consult the Department of Accessibility Services.

Students desiring a single room for the upcoming academic year can place their names on the Single Room Waitlist starting the day after the end of the room selection process on your MyHousing page at myhousing.emory.edu.

Find a Roommate

Living with a roommate is one of the defining experiences in a student's college career. You will learn shared responsibility, conflict resolution, compromise, flexibility, and in many cases, you will be exposed to a diverse populace. This is a once in a lifetime chance to live in an academic environment and take advantage of all the opportunities on-campus living provides. Unlikely friends blossom everyday in our residence halls, and this is one of the ways that Oxford's community spirit is reinforced.

Helpful tips for getting along with your roommate

  • Know your values/lifestyle.
  • Be honest in sharing your values and lifestyle on your personal description form and while talking to possible roommates.
  • Communicate at appropriate times when something is bothering you (holding it in creates resentment). Communication right away avoids yelling at your roommate because you have waited too long to address your concerns.
  • Learn that living with others is learning how to compromise. Each roommate cannot have his/her way on every issue. Identify the big issues as well as those on which you can compromise. Learning how to be flexible is the key.
  • If you are having difficulty discussing issues, ask the Residential Education& Services staff (RA or RLC) for assistance. Our staff is trained to assist in these circumstances.

To help you make a positive roommate decision, you may want to use advanced search feature through myhousing to assist you.

Students can create a profile (my profile tab) and search for roommates based on the same questions used to complete the "personal preferences" section of the housing application.

Please note

Roommate requests must be mutual. All roommates will need to go into their respective MyHousing pages and request/accept each other. Do not allow "unmatched" roommate requests to stay on your account.

You do not have to have a roommate request to receive housing, if you do not match with a roommate, when assigned the system will match you with a roommate based on your application preferences.

You are not allowed to have anyone who has not been approved by RES to stay with you. Students are not allowed to bring their belongings to campus to store in their room prior to their approved arrival date. This includes bringing their items to the room where their roommate is currently present as the result of previous early arrival approval.

Please contact Residential Education and Services at or RES@emory.edu if you have any questions.

What to and Not to Bring

The important thing to remember is that it is a lot easier to have your parents send you the things you didn't realize you would need, than to find that you need to go through the hassle of shipping unnecessary items to your home from school. We recommend that you communicate with your roommate to decide who will bring large items such as televisions, stereos, or mini-refrigerators*.

Here is a list of items that on-campus residents often find helpful. This is NOT a list of required items, nor does it represent everything you might want or need:

  • Alarm clock
  • All purpose cleaner
  • Bath towels, soaps, robe, etc.
  • Bedding, sheets, pillows, blankets

  • Shower shoes
  • Small toolbox
  • Sports equipment
  • Television that can connect to our stream cable service, SpectrumU. More information here.
  • Trash can
  • Umbrella

All mini refrigerators should be ENERGY STAR rated.

Also, remember that there are stores around the Oxford/Covington area, such as Big K-Mart; Wal-Mart; Big Lots, etc. for picking up things you may have forgotten, or things you choose to purchase when you arrive at Oxford.

Perhaps more importantly, here are a few things that you MUST LEAVE AT HOME!

  • Air fryer
  • Any appliance with exposed heating coil

  • Plug-in air fresheners
  • Space heaters
  • String LED lights
  • Velcro, double-sided tape, hooks with double-sided taped, etc. will damage the walls when removed and are prohibited.

Here are a few things that we recommend you leave at home:

  • Expensive clothing and jewelry
  • Large pieces of luggage
  • Off-season clothes

Additional Housing Options

RES acknowledges that some students may have factors that affect their housing accommodations. Housing accommodation assignments are made on a case-by-case basis that recognizes the variability of individual needs and preferences and the fact that appropriate accommodations may be limited in number. As for all applicants for housing, no guarantee can be made that all stated preferences can be met. For full consideration, requests should be made at the start of any application period.

Oxford College of Emory University is committed to making housing accessible to all students. To that end, RES has accessible rooms for students with accommodation needs.  These rooms are distributed throughout the campus and may change from year to year. Please note: Housing does not provide accommodations for Learning Disabilities.

Students needing special accommodations based on a disability will need to complete the registration process for this purpose that is administered by the Department of Accessibility Services. RES staff members do not evaluate medical documentation or make any determination with regard to needed accommodations. Accommodations will be approved, as appropriate, based on receipt of documentation as outlined by DAS.

The DAS office at Oxford College of Emory University can be contacted at 404.727.9877 and the TDD is 404.712.2049, or by email at oas_oxford@emory.edu

Students who are registered with DAS will be contacted individually via email regarding procedures for securing housing during the room selection process.

Undergraduate housing at Oxford College of Emory University is designed with the purpose of housing enrolled students. RES is not able to accommodate family members, including spouses/domestic partners, minor children, or other dependents.

First- or Second-year students who are married may appeal to be released from the on campus requirement. Appeals to be released are not guaranteed.

First- or Second-year students who have children or other dependents may appeal to be released from the on campus requirement. Appeals to be released are not guaranteed.

All unmarried, full-time students must live on campus unless they live within commuting distance of the campus with a parent or legal guardian and have been approved to commute. Part-time students are generally not allowed to live on campus unless otherwise approved by the Director of RES. Students under the age of 17 are not permitted to live in campus residence facilities without the written consent of their parents/guardians and the Director of RES.

Request for Commuter Status

The philosophy of Oxford College is that students benefit most by living on campus, eating together in the dining hall, attending campus events, having late-night conversations with their roommates, and participating in campus life beyond the classroom. Therefore, students are required to live on campus.

Receiving permission to commute is an exception to this requirement and is granted on a case-by-case basis.

Students must have a complete and submitted housing application on file before requesting Commuter status. Commuter status requests received without completed housing applications will not be considered until a completed housing application is on file in our assignment system.

Must submit a request for Commuter Status by the end of the semester immediately preceding the term for which the request is made.

Must submit a request for Commuter Status by August 1 for a fall semester enrollment and by January 1 for a spring semester enrollment.

Requests for Commuter status will only be considered for students who are able to reside with parent(s) or legal guardian(s) within the local area.

The initial request for Commuter status must be submitted via the students MyHousing account. If the initial request is deemed feasible, the student will receive an email with further instructions on how to apply for commuter status. Note: the initial request deemed feasible does not mean that the request for Commuter status is approved.

Please note: Mid-year requests are RARELY granted except with documentation of significant extenuating circumstances.

Commuter status requests based on medical reasons must have information registered with the Department of Accessibility Services.

Commuter status requests based on financial reasons must have medium to high "need" information on file in the Office of Enrollment Services.

Commuter requests will not be considered based on roommate dissatisfaction. The RES staff will work with the student to help develop a more positive living experience or consider other on-campus accommodations.

Questions regarding the request process may be directed to: RES@emory.edu

Room Changes/Roommate Swap

At the beginning of each semester and depending on space availability, RES allows students to request to change their current assignments. Room Changes and Room/roommate Swap are the processes by which students can change their room assignment. The room change/swap application will open 2 weeks after the start of classes for each semester. Residents who change rooms without receiving written notice, will be assessed a $200 improper room change administrative fee.

All students currently residing in on-campus housing are eligible to participate in the room change/swap process.

For students who have roommates graduating early or leaving Oxford, you will be provided with a roommate after the reassignment process of our Interim Housing students. If you have a vacant space after the reassignment process, you will have more information sent to you at that time.

The open Room Change/Swap Process will open 2 weeks after the start of classes each semester and close 2 weeks before the last day of class each semester.

For Fall 2024, the application will open on September 11, 2024 and close on November 26, 2024. For Spring 2024, the application will open on January 28, 2025 and close on April 14, 2025.

Residents who wish to move to a different room on campus must fill out the Room Change/Swap Form. Room change requests will not be granted during the first 2 weeks and last 2 weeks of each semester.

Please note, upon approval of a room change/swap request, there will be a $150 Room Change/Swap Fee that will be applied to your OPUS account.
