Interim Housing

All students at Oxford College are required to live on campus. The on-campus living experience provides an opportunity to immerse yourself in your college experience. Due to the continued popularity of Oxford College resulting in a large first-year class, not every student can be assigned to a standard residential space immediately. To meet these housing commitments, Residential Education and Services has arranged for alternative spaces referred to as "Interim Housing". These Interim spaces are in our residence halls and still offer all students a comfortable and community based on-campus experience. Please see below for more information.

  • We try to assign students based on the date and time they completed and submitted a housing application. This means that those students who complete and submit their applications early (ex. early April) are typically housed before those students who complete and submit their Housing applications later (ex. late April, May).
  • We assign students at random in our available residential space. This means that students have the same likelihood to be placed in any of our four residential areas: The Jolley Residential Center (JRC), Murdy and Elizer Halls, Haygood Hall, and Fleming Hall.
  • We assign “MATCHED” roommates together. Matched roommates are considered a group in our system. Group size is 2 students for a double room and 3 students for a triple room.
  • We assign each student in a room with equal or greater the number of bed spaces than the size of the group. This means that a single un-MATCHED student can go into a double or triple, a group of two MATCHED roommates can go into a double or triple, and a group of three MATCHED roommates can only go into a triple. In some cases, a group of two MATCHED roommates will go into a triple and our system will place an un-MATCHED single student in the unassigned bed space to complete the triple.
  • We assign each student based on the information the student entered in their preferences when completing the Housing application.  We use the preference information to place un-MATCHED students together.

A variety of locations are used for Interim Housing. We convert study lounges in Murdy/Elizer, Fleming, and Haygood West into Interim rooms. We have also increased the capacity in some double occupancy rooms in Murdy/Elizer and Fleming to accommodate three students. These Interim rooms are comparable to the standard residential rooms in size and furniture. The only difference is converted study room spaces will not have a vanity area (mirror & sink).

Furnishings include a twin XL bed, closet space/wardrobe, dresser, desk and chair for each student.

Bring what you would normally bring to a room, such as clothes, school supplies, toiletries, linens, etc. For more information on what to bring/what not to bring view the checklist below. We encourage you to be selective about what you bring and consider leaving at home things you won’t need right away such as heavy winter clothes or additional furnishings since you will be moving to a standard residential space when one becomes available.

The staff members from Residential Education and Services (RAs, RLCs, Assistant Directors, Director) are eager to do what they can to make your stay as comfortable as possible. When you arrive on campus, staff in your assigned hall will help with any questions or concerns or you are welcome to call the RES office and speak with our Assistant Director.

The precise length of your stay in Interim Housing is difficult to predict. Reassignments out of Interim Housing will continue as we receive cancellations and space becomes available. The number of residents who make last-minute decisions to withdraw from classes, not move into their assignments, or otherwise leave housing early in the semester will determine when standard assignments can be made. It is possible that you will be moved to a standard space prior to your move-in date. It is also possible that you will be moved after your move-in date at any point until the end of the semester. The length of time depends on the number of cancellations we receive and the speed at which we receive them.

Yes, if you are still assigned to an Interim room upon check-in we will provide additional accommodations. At this time, all students in interim housing will receive a housing rate discount for the fall semester and priority in next year's housing selection process. You will also receive more information at check-in.

Students placed in interim housing are charged the full rate at the beginning of the semester. A room discount is offered for the fall semester. A partial price reduction is applied after a student is moved out of interim housing, based on the length of time that they had to stay in interim housing.

The configurations are only examples.  Actual room configurations can differ slightly.
